The Client/Patient Experience Part 3
The final session of this 3-part course welcomed back delegates who had attended the first 2 courses and delegates new to Therapy Learning but who knew of the course via Celia and the Painless Practice. We have had such a giggle with those who have attended all the 3 days and hope to hear of their successes over the coming months and years.
Beyond The Treatment Room: This last session focused on what to do after the treatment sessions have finished.
Once again the day was divided between knowledge from Celia and practical sessions where we had the chance to discuss ideas between us and share our thoughts. The feedback from everyone highlighted that a majority of the group, 4 people, felt Celia to be an excellent speaker and 2 felt she was good. 3 expressing the course content was excellent, 2 good and 2 satisfactory.
It was felt that the course details and contact with Therapy Learning had primarily been excellent / good. The hotel had mainly good reviews with 4 people finding the comfort of the training room to be excellent; that overall the situation of the hotel was good for all to reach and that the food had been good. The one change, this time, had been that we could not have lunch in the main dining room and so had a buffet instead - those of us on the other 2 courses all agreed we preferred a hot meal!

Talkshop 2011
Please visit the conference workshop at www.talk-shop.org for all updated details about the conference.
This day was for both Speech and Language & Occupational Therapists (NHS and independent therapists, assistants, students and anyone else who was interested!) and was the first conference of its kind. Hopefully it will become an annual event - we had some really helpful feedback and it is clear that folk felt it to be valuable day and would like to attend again.

The Client/Patient Experience Part 2
In The Treatment Room: This session focused on the non-clinical aspect of managing the time in a 'treatment room'; the treatment room being anywhere you are carrying out intervntion.
The feedback for this course was good and all seemed to have 'eureka moments' ... lovely to be with people when that happens! This was such a relaxed, happy day and we all went home 'buzzing' (strange, as it wasn't a course about keeping bees)!
5 delegates said Celia was an excellent speaker and 1, good. There was an equal split for 'course content' - 3 finding it to be excellent and 3 good. 4 people found it an excellent opportunity for networking and 2 as good.
There was good feedback for the hotel about the situation, food and comfort of training room; with one comment that parking was not so easy. Ed - for such a large conference facility they could definitely do with a bigger car park; however we haven't had too many problems with it.1 September 2011, Best Western Premier - Yew Lodge Hotel, Derby

The Client/Patient Experience Part 1
What a COMPLETELY FABULOUS COURSE! Therapy Learning are so pleased we listened to delegate wishes for Painless Practice to run this course with us. The day was called 'Getting Clients to Hear of your Business' and focused on 'the client journey before they enlist your services'. It was geared to give your new practice the best 'start in life' or an established practice a complete re-vamp. It certainly did that! The day gave us all a chance to join in as it was very practical with real examples & anecdotes. The group was verbal from the first moment and gained so much from James and Celia by picking their brains constantly! We all left with individual action plans of what to change. The doubts and worries gave way to revelations and eager excitment of what could be achieved back at our practices.
After the course Claire Heslop sent the following information to her SLT colleagues: "I just wanted to let everyone know about the fantastic day I went on last week. First day of the Client Experience course provided by 'Therapy Learning'. The speakers are from 'Painless Practice' and are excellent facilitators helping everyone work out the answers for our individual practices ourselves. It was a really useful day looking at the 'business' side of our practice. Up until now I have found myself constantly thinking about my clinical skills and never really about the business side. While I have been on maternity leave though I have had the chance to distance myself from the therapy bit and think about what I want from my practice for the future. It was quite telling that everyone else on the course were osteopaths, practice managers for physio clinics and a couple of OTs. Very useful both for those of us who have been working independently for a few years (or a number of years!) and anyone starting out there as well. I find it very uncomfortable thinking about the marketing, money side of the business but the reality is that has to be thought about and go hand in hand with excellent clinical skills particularly in this day and age."
The next 2 parts will be run on 1st September and 13th October. We cannot emphasise enough just how brilliant these courses are ... as the organisers it all sounds a bit trite coming from us ... please come and find out for yourself ... you really won't regret it!

CPD for Independent Practitioners 2011
Those who came to "demystify the CPD process at this practical, informal and informative day" have given some great feedack!
Although we had been asked by some SaLTs to run this day we ended up with a room of OTs! The HPC audits for OTs are taking place again this year, so we wanted to give the opportunity for all to be prepared. We had hoped that this course would give delegates the confidence and security that they knew exactly what to prepare for exactly what the HPC require and could prove their competency in full and with clarity
We ran the course because we had heard many therapists asking the questions: “What are the HPC specifically looking for? Working independently is it more likely I’ll be audited? How do I demonstrate my clinical workload confidentially? What activities can I carry out? What should my portfolio consist of? Is my business development plan useful evidence?". As independent therapists undertake many different contracts, liaise with many other professionals, reflect regularly on each individual case, attend meetings and conferences of absolute value, they therefore have a wealth of evidence to place in their portfolios.
The course was to help guide how to use this information as evidence. Kate Sheehan was our faulous speaker and many thanks go to her for an informative and stimulating day.
We had 11 delegates, with 1 that could not attend due to health reasons. Their evaluation demonstrated that: 9 felt Kate to be an excellent speaker and 2 that she was good. 9 felt the course content, relative to their expectations, was excellent and 2 as good. There were 6 people who felt that contact with Therapy Learning, including course details and emails etc., was excellent and the other 5 felt this correspondence to be good. The venue and timetabling of the day appeared to give good networking opportunities; 7 expressing networking opportunities to be excellent and 4 as good. The situation of the Best Western and comfort of training room were found to be excellent by 5 delegates and 6 delegates respectively. So a great day was had by all and we definitely met our target of giving our delegates the information they needed to be prepared for the HPC audit.

Working Independently Within the Law 2011
If Therapy Learning were a diet ... this course is our staple! The well-renowned, knowledgeable speaker, Howard Thomas, comes back ever year to guide us through this potentially scary and dry topic with his very own special brand of humour!
As Independent Therapists, this is an exciting and essential course to improve our understanding of the Legal System, Negligence Liability, Consent to Treatment and how we Document and Keep Our Records. Throughout our working practice we MUST ensure we have this knowledge. It is an excellent CPD opportunity to learn what we need to know about the Legal System – to become informed and not fearful. There is also the opportunity to discuss the impact of Social Networking relating to the Data Protection Act & laws around privacy. Following our professional Code of Ethics must be adhered to at all times when portraying ourselves in the public arena.
Previous delegates sumed up their experience including: "Highly recommended & essential", "I liked the fact that I needed to take very few notes, lots of memorable examples & a comprehensive course booklet was supplied" and "A must attend for all health professionals, not only independent practitioners. Brilliant speaker!”

Basic Coaching Skills for Therapists and Health Professionals
This popular course has quickly returned to Therapy Learning's 2011 calendar! Coaching is a powerful approach to working with individuals and groups. It enables people to work towards what they want rather than what they don’t want. It is being fast recognised as the “missing link” in helping people to change health beliefs, raise self efficacy and develop sustainable plans. This day is aimed at independent practitioners who want to explore coaching and consider using it as part of their professional “tool kit”. It aims to provide some practical tools, hands-on practice and personal experience of coaching. It will show how coaching not only benefits our clients, but also supports our own personal and business development. Following an excellent course in October 2010 please see Coaching Skills 2010 for testimonials and further information.

How to Develop Your Private Practice 2010
A practical exploration of how to develop a private practice, which was perfectly suited for those fresh out of the NHS, or for those wanting to give an established practice a boost. For many, knowing how to market and operate a successful practice is a mystery – this course gave ready-to-use tips and thought-provoking exercises to help delegates grow their client lists. The programme gave many ideas for areas such as: marketing, communicating your 'brand', provision of resource information and by the end of the day delegates left having compiled a new action plan and with a course booklet. James was more than happy to answer any questions throughout the day. Sadly we did not have as many delegates as hoped, but for the 6 that came it provided a intimate, relaxed and informal setting in which to feel comfortable to talk openly. There was a lovely feeling of camaraderie throughout the day. Of the 6, 4 felt James to be an excellent speaker, 1 a good speaker and one did not mark a rating. 4 felt the course content to be excellent and 2 said it was good. The opportunity to network was found to be excellent by 5 and good for 1. It was the first time that Therapy Learning had run a course at Yew Lodge Hotel in Kegworth and we were very impressed with the level of committment and friendly professionalism of the staff. Due to reduced number of delegates we had a boardroom, which although it had a large skylight, 3 of the delegates would have preferred windows (as was the feeling of both Viv and Trish). We have always stipulated the need for lots of natural daylight and will ensure we maintain this standard from now on.

Basic Coaching Skills for Therapists and Health Professionals
This training day was fully booked and we had some fabulous feedback. Coaching is a powerful approach to working with individuals and groups. It enables people to work towards what they want rather than what they don’t want. It is being fast recognised as the “missing link” in helping people to change health beliefs, raise self efficacy and develop sustainable plans. The day was aimed at independent practitioners who wanted to explore coaching and consider using it as part of their professional “tool kit”. It aimed and fulfilled it's criteria to provide some practical tools, hands-on practice and personal experience of coaching. It showed how coaching not only benefits our clients, but also supports our own personal and business development. Of the 15 people who attended 8 felt the course content was excellent, 5 good and 1 satisfactory. Of our lovely speaker Jen, (Ed. we all loved your wings Jen!!!) 11 people thought she was an excellent speaker, 2 felt she was good and 1 satisfactory. With regard to the opportunity to network: 4 felt the day to be excellent, 5 good, 3 satisfactory and 1 felt time to be poor because they would have liked more times during breaks. Actually the breaks were not as long as usual during this course, as most folk wanted to get 'stuck in' or 'carry on' with the practical sessions.

Working Independently within the Law 2010
As Independent Therapists, once again, this was an exciting and essential course to improve our understanding of the Legal System, Negligence Liability, Consent to Treatment and how we Document and Keep Our Records. In our working practice we must ensure we have this knowledge. This was an excellent opportunity to learn what we needed to know about the Legal System – to become informed and not fearful. New to 2010: we also had the opportunity to discuss the impact of Social Networking relating to the Data Protection Act & laws around privacy. Following our professional Code of Ethics must be adhered to at all times when portraying ourselves in the public arena. We had 16 delegates and 13 expressed that both Howard and the contents of his course were excellent. 3 felt that the content was good and 2 that he was a good speaker (one person had not given Howard a rating). For Therapy Learning feedback people had felt that contact with us was: 6 = excellent, 9 good and 1 satisfactory.

Safeguarding Children & Adults
As independent practitioners we are expected, in accordance with the HPC standards, to "...retain [their] capacity to practise safely, effectively and legally within [their] evolving scope of practice’ (this definition is taken from the Allied Health Professions project, ‘Demonstrating competence through CPD’, 2002.) including mandatory key issues and core legislation. Hence we deemed this subject as of utmost importance for Independent Practitioners. The training was given by Matt Jackson of Trust Interventions, a specialist learning and development consultancy. Of the 5 people attending 3 felt the course content, relative to their expectations, was excellent and 2 good. 4 felt Matt to be an excellent speaker and 1 good. The course was held as a full morning, rather than the advertised split day - amalagmating both children and adults. This was necessary due to small delegate numbers. The learning outcomes have fulfilled the basic level of requirements for delegates to comply with their professional responsibilities. The Safeguarding Children session aimed to progress interagency working with a view to improving the outcomes for children in line with Working Together 2006. This is achieved by creating a shared understanding of inter-agency roles and responsibilities and identifying how personal responsibility can contribute to this. All delegates are now able to identify the clearly defined learning outcomes. The Safeguarding Adults Awareness session has been developed in accordance with ‘No Secrets’ (DoH, 2000), 5.2-5.3 and ‘Safeguarding Adults’ (ADASS, 2005). All delegates are now able to identify the clearly defined learning outcomes.

Basic Life Support / Conflict Resolution & Lone Working
We had a great practical training day: with 6 delegates attending. Matt is a very knowledgeable speaker who makes potentially dry topics stimulating and memorable. He runs Trust Interventions, a specialist learning and development consultancy. 4 of the delegates rated Matt as an excellent speaker and 2 as good. The delegates who attended either stayed the whole day or just came for the morning or afternoon thereby giving flexibility if both subjects not required. The Basic Life Support session in the morning was delivered in line with the Resuscitation Council UK guidance and was intended either as an update or for those who had never practised simulated Basic Life Support before. CPR/AED and accurate referral to emergency services skills were assessed and Matt provided delegates with a signed training record as evidence for their CPD portfolios. Overall this course addressed a balance of both theoretical and practical skills requirements with an opportunity to practise in a safe environment. In the afternoon the Conflict Resolution & Lone Working course was delivered in line with the NHS Business Services Authority Conflict Resolution National Syllabus and was intended either as an update or for those who had never attended such a course before. Overall it addressed a balance of both theoretical and practical skills requirements for conflict resolution but did not require delegates to undertake role play.

Business Promotion: Social Communication Networks are the way forward
This day was aimed at any independent practitioner who wanted to understand the nuances of social communication networks. The tag line for this event was: Rather than being baffled come and break down the barriers around social networking and embrace the technology that will give you the confidence to look more openly and creatively at ways of enhancing your day to day work and promote your name and therefore your business. Removing some of the mysteries was definitely achieved and by the end of the day I think we all went away with the confidence to continue to explore social media further! Discussion and practical advice on how to negotiate and join various social media sites such as Twitter, LinkedIn and how to devise and set up our own blogs was carried out throughout the day - everyone with their laptops open afore them! Jon's name was in demand "How do I just ..." and necks were craned at our neighbours' screens "So how did you do that already?!" It is now understandable that such networking can put you in touch with a wealth of other professionals; give you the means to keep in contact with clients - especially those who may have social skills difficulties; improve links for supervision and mentoring and possibly even bring you potential clients. Although it was apparent that each delegate had a definite leaning towards one favoured 'tool'. We had a very interesting discussion about ethics which is a topic that TL will follow up in the Working Independently Within the Law course in September. Please see http://post.ly/iT2x for the thoughts that Jon blogged after the day and join in the ongoing discussions. It was great fun setting up our own blogs! Some folk have a better eye for colour and design! (I did decide not to stick with the turquoise background Lisa ... thankfully eh!!) There are no photos for the day ... due to reduced numbers, just 4 delegates, we held it at Trish's house and thus wanted to keep her privacy. Why ON EARTH didn't more people flock to this course? It was such a educative day. The highlights of the non-working part of the day were Trish's superb homemade cake and sitting outside eating strawberries! Delegate feedback rated: (only had 3 of 4 feedback forms back at present) - Jon was felt to be an excellent speaker by 2 delegates and by 1 as good - In relation to where the course held the situation was good for all, with the food rated as excellent by all 3 - the opportunity for networking was good for all. Many thanks Jon - it was a great day! If you want the opportunity to come on this stimulating and practical day in the future please get in touch - when we have enough folk we can arrange another day with Jon.

Manual Handling Refresher Course
This day was for all independent practitioners to come and update their knowledge on moving and handling both clients and equipment. It incorporated both theory and practical elements with the opportunity to update knowledge on high risk moves, care handling versus therapeutic handling and hands on practice with equipment used in most work settings. We had just 4 attendees but it gave them the opportunity for more interaction and 1:1 guidance during the afternoon practical session. The whole day had a very relaxed and informal air with all delegates happy to ask questions and get clarification throughout the day. We had a demonstration of the Roomer in the afternoon by Human Care (thanks to Richard for being available at the last minute!) which was attended by our delegates, clients and contractors - there was good feedback about this versatile ceiling tracking system. Unfortunately Lisclare could not attend as originally planned but they still very kindly sponsored the lunch. Delegate feedback rated: - Diana to be an excellent speaker by 3 delegates and by 1 as good - In relation to the Nottingham DLC the situation was excellent for 2 people and good for 2 - The comfort of the room as excellent for one, good by 2 and satisfactory by 1 - Opportunity for networking was excellent for 3 and good for 1. It is hoped that there will be enough demand for this course to be repeated. If venturing to another part of the country a venue with relevant equipment will be sought as it was advantageous to have everything pertinent on site.

‘Can anybody hear me?’ Better listening in independent practice.
Sadly we had to cancel this course due to extreme lack of numbers. Trish and I were very priviledged in being invited to the speaker's house so she could give us a condensed version of the day - we both gleaned new knowledge and the opportunity to hone some of our existing skills. We came away wishing others had been able to share the experience and hope that we will be able to offer this course to our fellow practitioners somewhen in the future. The precis for the course had been: The beauty of independent practice is having the time to spend with individual clients to be able to listen to them in depth. You might be the first person that really listens to the client, and doing so is invaluable when considering how best to help. But how able do you feel to encourage your clients to open up so that you can explore their needs fully? What are the important cues and signals to listen for? How can you respond to a client's tears so that they feel understood but are not left in pieces when you leave? This training day will help you to build on existing skills as well as developing new techniques for listening more effectively. It is a practical, enjoyable, inspiring and active day that aims to give you a variety of helpful listening skills to add to your toolbox. Stand out from the crowd and maximise your potential as an independent practitioner by learning to listen better. When Trish and I have the opportunity, hopefully during the summer period, we will try and share some of the things we learnt via our news page.

How to Develop your Private Practice
James Butler lead us through a fascinating day of practical exploration of how to develop a private practice. It was perfectly suited for either those fresh out of the NHS, or for those wanting to give an established practice a boost. For many, knowing how to market and operate a successful practice is a mystery – this course gave ready-to-use tips and thought-provoking exercises to help us grow our client list. The course included topics such as: marketing, communicating your 'brand', provision of resource information and we left the day having compiled a new business action plan and a course booklet to read at our leisure. Questions were posed to James before the day and he answered them all throughout the day. Part of the course included a 1/2 hour free consultation (at any time after the course) to each delegate attending. The venue we used was Thrumpton Hall (www.thrumptonhall.com) and much to Viv and Trish's annoyance we forgot our cameras! Therefore we cannot show you the sumptious setting for the course and wonderful spread of food! We had 20 delegates (James preferred number - it gives him the opportunity to give quite specific feedback to everyone's questions) and of those 17 felt James to be an excellent speaker and 3 as a good one. Despite the grand setting the downfall was the layout within the training room - delegates were seated around a U shaped table which meant that some had to twist slightly in order to see the screen. Due to this fact Therapy Learning will not use this venue again for such a large number of delegates. We can thoroughly recommend it though - the conference organisers are excellent. On a personal note it made me completely re-evaluate what I really wanted for the future ... not just for my business ... hence wedding bells were heard in October 2010!!

Effective Networking Techniques and Managing Your Business
We had 9 delegates who attended this highly participative, fun and rewarding training day. It was aimed at all independent health practitioners who were either setting up or already managing their own business. In todays current work climate there is not only the need to be an excellent clinician but a competent and engaging business person. And as there are more practitioners who are looking to work in the independent field - this course was to highlight how the delegates could be 'one step ahead of the rest' in building their profile and business. Sue Tonks showed us the humorous sides of networking; developing skills in building relationships and how to ask the right questions. Plus she helped us solve the question “What do you do?” and showed us how to follow up effectively after meeting people. With her special guest (who’s name will remain a secret!) she helped us become confident and effective networkers. The day was also geared to help give an insight into the difficulties faced when self-employed, information about pressures of expanding & growing a business & how to influence others to help you achieve your business objectives. Of the 9 delegates, all felt her to be an excellent speaker; with 8 finding the course content to be excellent in relation to their expectations and 1 feeling it to be good.

CPD for Independent Practitioners
This fabulous day was for all independent practitioners - primarily trying to target the professions who were next to be auditted including: "Aug ‘09 – Orthoptists; Aug ‘09 – Paramedics; Sept ‘09 - Clinical scientists, Prosthetists and Orthotists and Speech and Language Therapists; Oct ‘09 - Occupational Therapists; Nov ‘09 - Biomedical Scientists; Feb ‘10 – Radiographers; April ‘10 – Physiotherapists and May ‘10 - Art therapists and Dietitians. All evidence has to show that the CPD an individual has undertaken has contributed to the quality of their practice and demonstrates that it benefited the service user. The standards apply not only to those in clinical practice, but also to those working in research, management or education." Source: HPC Introduce CPD requirements from July 2006 30/05/2006 www.hpc-uk.org. The training course aimed to provide answers to: Are you ready to prove your competency? How can you best prove your competency? “What are the HPC specifically looking for? Working independently is it more likely I’ll be audited? How do I demonstrate my clinical workload confidentially? What activities can I carry out? What should my portfolio consist of? Is my business development plan useful evidence?" This practical, informative day with its 2 expert speakers - Lynch Mason and Kate Sheehan was offered to ensure delegates attending the course could feel fully confident & prepared for the HPC process. Kate delivered information and guidance from the HPC and Lynch worked through the practicalities of actually putting together our portfolios. 11 therapists attended the day and both Lynch and Kate had excellent feedback with 5 delgates feeling the course content relative to their needs was excellent, 3 as good and 1 as satisfactory (2 delegates had not scored this section).

Tax Can be Relaxing!
This day was geared at independent practitioners who were both new to self-employment or who had been in business for a few years but still had queries and questions they haven’t dared ask their accountant! Even before launching into the world of self-employment, “What do I do about tax – I don’t know where to start” seems to be the statement which holds people back. This informative and reassuring training day answered everyones questions and much more besides. Michael imparted his knowledge in a humorous and thoroughly understandable manner. The feedback was such that, out of 8 questionnaires returned, 8 felt Michael had been an excellent speaker and 8 felt the course content, relative to their expectations, had been excellent. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you would like to attend this course in the future.

Working Independently within the Law June 2007
Documentation and litigation issues were highlighted for those working independently and wishing to keep within the law. Due to the success of this first Therapy Learning course and Howard Thomas' enthusiasm and expertise this course will definitely be repeated! Thanks Howard - you are a star! 31 delegates attended this course and 29 filled in their evaluation forms. Howard was rated as a good speaker by 2 people and as excellent by the other 27. 23 felt that the course content was excellent in relation to their expectations and 6 felt it to be good. Hilton East Midlands Airport Hotel scored well for sitaution, comfort of training room and food. All in all it was a positive, enlightening day with delegates having a lot of information to put into practice when they got back to their businesses.
