‘Can anybody hear me?’ Better listening in independent practice.
The beauty of independent practice is having the time to spend with individual clients to be able to listen to them in depth. You might be the first person that really listens to the client, and doing so is invaluable when considering how best to help. But how able do you feel to encourage your clients to open up so that you can explore their needs fully? What are the important cues and signals to listen for? How can you respond to a client's tears so that they feel understood but are not left in pieces when you leave? This training day will help you to build on existing skills as well as developing new techniques for listening more effectively. It is a practical, enjoyable, inspiring and active day that aims to give you a variety of helpful listening skills to add to your toolbox. Stand out from the crowd and maximise your potential as an independent practitioner by learning to listen better.

Manual Handling Refresher Course
This day is for all independent practitioners to update their knowledge on moving and handling both clients and equipment. The course will incorporate both theory and practical elements. As a therapist you will get a chance to update your knowledge on high risk moves, care handling versus therapeutic handling and have hands on practice with equipment you use in your work settings. Why should you attend an update? As either a sole trader, employer or employee it is your responsibility under the health and safety at work act 1974; management of health and safety at work regulations 1999 and manual handling operations regulations 1992, to make use of appropriate equipment provided in accordance with training and make ongoing individual risk assessments. This course will provide you with an update in both the current theory and hands on experience of moving and handling. This course is practical and interactive with time to practice hands on and build up confidence; the trainer being approachable and non-judgemental, with no question too simple or obvious.

Essential Tax Issues for Independent Practitioners
This day is geared at independent practitioners who are both new to self-employment or who have been in business for a few years but still have queries and questions they haven’t dared ask their accountant. Even before launching into the world of self-employment, “What do I do about tax – I don’t know where to start” seems to be the statement which holds people back. Come to this informative and reassuring training day to discover that tax isn’t a four letter word! Plus remember - you can claim tax back from all the courses you go on - including this one. So, come to this course and save yourself a lot of money! A previous delegate to the course wrote the following: “Everyone came away with a much better understanding of what financial records were essential and how to go about gathering, recording and storing this information. The course also allowed for some lengthy discussion on what constituted expenses and how to work out what percentage of costs could be claimed against tax if working from home ... A greater understanding on the differences between sole traders and companies (limited and unlimited) was gained by all ... Gaining an insight into the Receiver of Revenue was very helpful in dispelling some of the fears that lack of knowledge can bring ... All in all it was an informative and hugely valuable day that is to be recommended.”

Business Promotion: Social Communication Networks are the way forward
Anyone who attended the COTSS-IP annual conference in 2009 will have heard Jon speak and been inspired by his lively, down to earth, understandable and fun approach to bringing businesses into the 21st century. Prior to his presentation he had started Tweeting about the conference and by the end of the day was receiving tweets from OT's who hadn't even attended the event ... (in doing this some have employed his services to gain further advice about blogging, websites etc!) For some of us this sounds like an alien concept. Rather than being baffled come and break down the barriers around social networking and embrace the technology that will give you the confidence to look more openly and creatively at ways of enhancing your day to day work and promote your name and therefore your business. Such networking will put you in touch with a wealth of other professionals; give you the means to keep in contact with clients - especially those who may have social skills difficulties; improve links for supervision and mentoring and possibly even bring you potential clients. Finally web design can make sense - at the end of this practical training day you should have set up a basic blog / website and will have plenty of tips to put into practice immediately. Remember to bring your laptop! Venue will be confirmed when we know numbers of delegates - the day will be held in the Nottinghamshire / Leicestershire area.

Safeguarding Children & Adults (either a full day course or split into 2 sessions)
As independent practitioners we are expected, in accordance with the HPC standards, to "...retain [their] capacity to practise safely, effectively and legally within [their] evolving scope of practice’ (this definition is taken from the Allied Health Professions project, ‘Demonstrating competence through CPD’, 2002.) including mandatory key issues and core legislation. This day can be either: completed as a whole day with lunch and refreshments included; or just morning or afternoon attendance with refreshments only. Training is to be given by Trust Interventions, a specialist learning and development consultancy. Both session's learning outcomes will fulfil the basic level of requirements for delegates to comply with their professional responsibilities. The Safeguarding Children morning session aims to progress interagency working with a view to improving the outcomes for children in line with Working Together 2006. This is achieved by creating a shared understanding of inter-agency roles and responsibilities and identifying how personal responsibility can contribute to this. All delegates will be able to identify the clearly defined learning outcomes by the end of the session. The Safeguarding Adults Awareness afternoon session has been developed in accordance with ‘No Secrets’ (DoH, 2000), 5.2-5.3 and ‘Safeguarding Adults’ (ADASS, 2005). All delegates will be able to identify the clearly defined learning outcomes by the end of the session.

Working Independently within the Law 2010
As Independent Therapists this is an exciting and essential course to improve our understanding of the Legal System, Negligence Liability, Consent to Treatment and how we Document and Keep Our Records. In our working practice we must ensure we have this knowledge. This is your opportunity to come and learn what you need to know about the Legal System – be informed not fearful. One delegate who last attended this course said: “A MUST attend for all health professionals, not only independent practitioners. Brilliant speaker!” Another said “ESSENTIAL ATTENDENCE – will ensure that as a therapist you do not become complacent”.

Basic Coaching Skills for Therapists and Health Professionals
Coaching is a powerful approach to working with individuals and groups. It enables people to work towards what they want rather than what they don’t want. It is being fast recognised as the “missing link” in helping people to change health beliefs, raise self efficacy and develop sustainable plans. This day is aimed at independent practitioners who want to explore coaching and consider using it as part of their professional “tool kit”. It aims to provide some practical tools, hands-on practice and personal experience of coaching. It will show how coaching not only benefits our clients, but also supports our own personal and business development.

How to Develop Your Private Practice
A practical exploration of how to develop a private practice, perfectly suited for those fresh out of the NHS, or for those wanting to give an established practice a boost. For many, knowing how to market and operate a successful practice is a mystery – this course will give ready-to-use tips and thought-provoking exercises to help you grow your client list. Looking at the programme will give you a flavour of the course - including: marketing, communicating your 'brand', provision of resource information and you will leave the day having compiled a new action plan and with a course booklet. Any questions delegates have for James will be given to him prior to the course so he can answer each specific one; which he is more than happy to throughout the day. He prefers to have no more than 20 people so he can focus on everyones requirements, including looking at websites and business cards to offer general advice. After the course he offers each delegate 1/2 hour free consultation. Testimonial from previous course delegate “Excellent day to help people wanting to promote their practice/review current practice management.”
